Baptism
Acts 2:38 says, “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, and the New Testament was mainly written in Greek. The Greek word for “baptized” is βαπτίζω or baptizō which means to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water. When you are baptized, you are dunked down fully in water, not sprinkled.
There is no bible for baptizing babies because to be baptized one must know what they are doing and must have faith in Jesus Christ. One may wonder if they are able to get re-baptized and according to the bible, yes! Acts 19:1-6 reads, “And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples, he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”
When Paul heard they weren’t baptized in Jesus’ name, they were re-baptized.
What about Matthew 28:19 when it says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Is this a contradiction? Are we supposed to be baptized under these titles?
No, we are to be baptized in Jesus' name. Jesus is the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s why Matthew 28:19 said to be baptized “in the name”. In the NAME! In the NAME! In the NAME! Let’s take Bob as an example. Bob is a father to 3 kids, a husband to his wife, and the CEO of a company. If Bob were to write out a check under “father”, it would not work. If he wrote out a check under “husband”, it would not work. Bob would have to put his name. The name represents who he is. Bob is a husband, father, and CEO! The name represents the titles bob has, same with Jesus. Jesus is the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We need His name applied to us in baptism.
